Environmental Degradation, Reparations, and the Moral Significance of History

Caney's article talks about possible reparations. He mostly speaks about reparations for climate change, yet his arguments in the article can be applied to many long lasting problems. Caney also goes on to explain two different methods about how to go about seeking these reparations. One is the casual account which is explained as the direct person who caused the injustice being responsible for paying those in direct harm from the action. The second is the beneficiary account, this one is explained as the people who benefited from the action paying the reparations.

Slavery is a very long lasting event that can be used in this conversation. Although slavery isn't as terrible as it used to be there are still people enslaved in different parts of the world. Even without speaking about the current slavery, African Americans are still unequal compared to others. Caucasian Americans got a head start to the business world in the most unethical way compared to African Americans. When slavery was "abolished" there were no where near enough reparations which has lead us to this very unethical and not equal world. In this situation not many people can be punished by the Casual account because of how long ago slavery was at its extreme point. The best choice in most peoples mind would be the beneficiary account, yet i do not believe people should be punished for something they didn't and have never even thought of taking part in.
